New Mexico Permit Test 2013

Taking a permit test is the first step towards achieving a New Mexico learners permit. The 2013 New Mexico permit test covers the state driving rules and road signs and you will need to show that you are no stranger to these things. Permit testing is conducted by the New Mexico MVD during regular business hours at all full service offices. More than half of the first time New Mexico drivers permit test takers fail the test, mostly because they are not prepared for the exam. If you want to see what the permit test questions are like, go ahead and take a free 2013 New Mexico practice permit test that covers the same topics as the real knowledge exam.

New Mexico Permit Test Questions

The permit test in New Mexico has 25 multiple choice and true or false questions and the passing score is 70 percent. This means that you will need to give at least 18 correct answers. The passing score for the New Mexico permit test is a bit lower than that in other states, but hopefully that is due for a change some time soon. The permit test questions cover the information provided in the New Mexico MVD test book - road signs, driving rules and safe driving practices and you can find answers to all test questions in the book. Taking this info account, the fact that more than a half of the first time test takers fail the exam looks unbelievable. The information is out there, available to anyone who wants to study, yet 50 percent of people choose not to do anything with it.

The reason why the number of people who fail their New Mexico permit exam is so high is because most of the applicants underestimate the level of questions they are presented with on the test and think that general knowledge of the state driving rules is sufficient for passing the exam. This could not be further from the truth, the MVD requires you to have in-depth knowledge of the state traffic regulations before you can be issued with a New Mexico drivers license.

Here is a sample practice permit question similar to the ones you will see on the real New Mexico permit test, just so you get an idea of what you will be up against:

“You cannot park within ____ ft. of a traffic signal, stop sign or yield sign,”

a) 20
b) 25
c) 30
d) 35
e) 40

The correct answer to this practice question is located at the end of the page.

The real New Mexico drivers permit test has 25 questions like the one above and you won't be able to guess the answers to all of them, the only way to guarantee that you pass the exam the first time you take it is to study hard.

Preparing for The Drivers Permit Test

There are a few ways you could prepare for the drivers permit test, some of them are free while other will cost you a few bucks. You can choose a study option that suits your schedule, study preferences and your budget, but what you have to remember is that regardless which study option you go for, you must actually invest time into learning the course materials, there is no other way to get that information into your head. Be a responsible adult and start studying well in advance.

The official drivers license handbook is probably the first study guide you should turn to when preparing for the New Mexico learner's permit test. The book is free and very easy to obtain - you can either download it online or pick it up at one of the MVD locations - and it contains virtually everything you need to know about driving. As mentioned previously, all questions on the permit exam come from this book so theoretically, the book is all you need. Those who apply for a license before the age of 18 should pay extra attention to the section that covers the New Mexico graduated drivers license rules, there are additional requirements for teenage drivers that must be met before a full drivers license can be issued.

Drivers education classes is another great way to get prepared for the knowledge exam. If you are under 18 years of age, taking a New Mexico drivers education class is mandatory and you will not be able to get a learners permit unless you can present proof that you are currently enrolled in and are taking a state-approved drivers education program. Although adult drivers license applicants are only required to take a “None for The Road” drug and alcohol awareness course and can skip taking a drivers education class, we advise everyone to go through drivers ed. Statistics show that drivers who completed some form of a drivers education class are usually less likely to be involved in a traffic accident than those who choose not to take the class. Many insurance companies recognize this fact by granting drivers ed graduated with car insurance discounts that can partially offset the price of the class.

Finally, we also have practice permit tests. Practice tests won't do you much good if they are used as the only study resource as they simply weren't designed for such use. You must study a drivers handbook or participate in a drivers ed class before you take a New Mexico permit practice test. Practice tests just help you pinpoint the driving rules you may have missed while studying and learn the wording that is used on the actual MVD permit test. You can buy practice tests through commercial driving schools or find free versions of the test online. Remember, there is also a New Mexico MVD practice test and a New Mexico driving practice test available on the website, make sure to check out sample permit questions from those tests as well.
