Taking The Mississippi Drivers Permit Test

According to the Mississippi graduated drivers license law, the minimum age for taking a permit test is 14, if you are enrolled in a drivers education class, and 15 if you are not attending any drivers ed programs. Once you reach this age, you can visit a local drivers license testing facility and apply for a permit. No appointment is necessary and you can come any time during the regular business hours, but be prepared to do the following when you show up at the office for your Mississippi DMV permit test:

  • present proof of identification
  • provide proof of age
  • provide proof of Mississippi residency
  • provide your Social Security Number
  • fill in the Application for a drivers license
  • pay the learners permit fee - $4
  • take a vision test
  • take the permit test

If you are under 18 years of age, you must also present a school certification form that you can obtain at your high school. The form must be issued within 30 days of the application date.

Learners permit applicants under the age of 17 must have their parents or legal guardians present at the time of the application. Parental consent is crucial in the licensing process and teenagers cannot be issued neither a permit nor a license without parental signature on the application form.

In Mississippi, the permit test is provided in a computerized form. You will answer multiple choice questions on the computer and you will see your score right away. Please note that you are not allowed to use any study aids while taking the test. This covers the drivers manual, your personal notes and usage of electronic communication devices. If your examiner suspects that you are cheating, your test will be marked as failed and you may be denied another chance at taking the test for an uncertain period.

If you fail your Mississippi driving permit test the first time, you are allowed to retake it the next business day. You have up to three attempts at passing the test, if you still fail, you will have to wait at least 30 days before retaking the exam.
