No matter how old you are when you decide to apply for a drivers license, you still have to take a New Jersey permit test. The permit test is the same no matter what type of the learners permit you are applying for - a special learners permit or an examination permit. The New Jersey learners permit test was designed to evaluate your knowledge of traffic laws and road signs in order to ensure that you are able to read the on-road information.

New Jersey Permit Test Questions

The permit test questions come directly from the New Jersey drivers permit test book and it would do you well to read the manual before you attempt to tuckle the exam. One of the most common mistakes is to underestimate how hard the New Jersey permit questions are. Most of the first time applicants don't have any problems with identifying the road signs due to the fact that they almost each one of those road signs on public roads. However, when it comes to answering the questions that cover the traffic law or safe driving practices, the general picture is not that great. For example, do you know how many points off your license you will lose if you don't yield to a pedestrian on a cross walk? Do you know whether you need to speed up or slow down when entering a highway? What is the best way to enter a curve?

Your New Jersey driver permit test can contain these and other similar questions and you will need to study if you want to pass the test the first time you take it. The learners permit test has 50 questions on it and the passing score is 80%, so you will need to give at least 40 correct answers.

Studying for The New Jersey MVC Permit Test

There is a number of different options you can choose from when getting ready for the New Jersey MVC permit test. You should probably start with the drivers handbook as it is free and it includes the information on all relevant traffic laws, road signs and pretty much everything you need to know to be able to pass the permit test. The book also contains a section on the New Jersey graduated drivers license laws teenage drivers will find especially useful.

IF you are not satisfied with the materials provided in the book, you can opt into one of the NJ drivers education programs. Although the state does not require anyone to complete a drivers education program at the moment, it may still be a good idea to do so. Apart from providing the basics which are also present in the drivers manual, drivers ed classes provide plenty of advanced driving tips that will come in handy when you start driving alone.

Finally, there are also New Jersey practice permit tests. The practice tests should not be used as a sole study guide as they are simply not designed for that. The idea behind the tests is that you will study the book first and then use the permit practice tests to identify the rules you may be struggling with.

Taking The Drivers Permit Test

You can take the learners permit test at any MVC office. If you are under 17 years of age and you are applying for a special learners permit, you must enroll in a 6 hour behind the wheel program prior to applying for the permit. Once enrolled, visit one of the MVC offices with your instructor, present the required documentation and the instructor will be able to purchase the special permit for you. Once you are done with the 6 hour class, you will need to visit one of the MV Driver License Testing centers to have your permit validated. You cannot drive with your parents until your special learners permit is validated.

Those who are over 17 years of age don't need to enroll in any classes. In order to take the New Jersey DMV driver's permit test, visit the testing center with the following documents:

• proof of ID
• proof of residence
• Social Security card

If you are under 18 years of age, your parents will need to sign the consent form to prove that they don't mind you obtaining a permit. You must also pay the permit fee of $10 prior to taking the actual test.

At the time of the application, you will also be subjected to a vision exam. Please refer to the state's vision standards for additional information regarding your vision exam.

In New Jersey, the permit test is provided in many languages other than English. You can choose to take the test in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. No matter what language you choose, you must still be able to read basic English that is used on road signs. If the test is not available in your language, you may request services of an approved interpreter.

When you pass the learners permit test, you are issued a special learners permit or an examination permit, depending on your age. The permit comes with numerous restrictions and you need to observe them if you don't want to lose your driving privileges.

The restrictions will be removed when you pass your driver test and go through all steps of the graduated license program. At this stage, you are granted a full New Jersey drivers license. The minimum age for a full unrestricted license is 18.
