Massachusetts Learners Permit
Massachusetts learners permit, sometimes also referred to as drivers permit, is the first document you receive that allows you to drive a vehicle on public roads. The Massachusetts learners permit allows you to gain the essential skills required for obtaining a drivers license.

If you are watching the news frequently, chances are that you have stumbled onto a few cases when a teen was involved in a car accidents. Around the country, teens have the highest crash rates among all age groups. This is why the state introduced a set of laws that forces teenagers to take Massachusetts drivers education program before they can be issued with a learners permit. The course helps teenagers appreciate the danger of driving and allows them to gain some driving experience before they start driving unsupervised. The graduated driver license system in Massachusetts also employs a number of permit and license restrictions
Learners Permit Application
The application procedure is very straight forward. If you are at least 16 years old and you have enrolled in a drivers ed program, visit a local RMV office and take your learner's permit test. The exam will test your knowledge of Massachusetts driving rules, so make sure you study before you go in.
You can prepare for the exam by checking out the Massachusetts driving handbook, which is distributed by the RMV free of charge. The handbook can be complimented with some Massachusetts practice tests.
Once you pass the exam, you are issued with your drivers permit.
Learners Permit Restrictions
One things people tend to forget is that the learners permit is not a full license yet, there are certain restrictions you need to observe while driving with your permit. You are not allowed to operate a motor vehicle unless there is a licensed driver at least 21 years old seated next to you.
Junior Operator License
If you are under 18 years of age, you cannot upgrade your learners permit directly to the Massachusetts drivers license, there is an intermediate stage that you will have to go through. Once you have held your Massachusetts learners permit for at least 6 months, completed the drivers education course, supervised driving hours and the road test at the RMV, you will be issue with the Junior Operators License. This license does not require a supervising driver to be present at all times, but still has certain passenger restrictions and curfew. The operator's license can be upgraded to the unrestricted Massachusetts drivers license.
