Oklahoma Learners Permit
If you made up your mind and you would like to obtain a drivers license, applying for the Oklahoma learners permit will be your first step. The learners permit is part of the graduated licensing system and it was designed to give you the opportunity to gain some driving experience before you get out on the road on your own.
Oklahoma Graduated Drivers License System
With a few minor differences, the GDL system in Oklahoma is pretty much the same as in all other states and it pursues the same goals - to reduce the number of casualties on public roads. It has been shown that one of the major risk factors on the road is lack of experience. New drivers frequently fail to correctly judge the driving conditions, which leads to terrible accidents. It is even more true when the driver in question is a teenager, who can easily get distracted and is prone to the risk-taking behavior. The GDL introduces such things as compulsory learners permit and drivers license testing, supervised driving and intermediate license before the driver is granted full driving privileges.
Applying for Your Learners Permit
The main obstacle on your way towards the Oklahoma learners permit is the permit test. The exam is taken at one of the Department of Public Safety offices and they are provided on the walk-in basis, you do not have to schedule the exam.
Drivers Ed For Drivers Permit
If you are under 16 years of age, you will also have to go through a drivers education program before you can take your permit test. Finding a drivers ed course should not be a problem, as such programs are offered by high schools, commercial driving schools. If you prefer home schooling, you may wish to apply for one of the parent taught drivers education programs.
Studying for The Oklahoma Drivers Permit Exam
If you are taking one of the drivers ed programs, you probably won't need any help with preparing for the exam as most of the programs are very thorough and cover everything you need to know. Those who did not take drivers ed classes may prepare for the learners permit exam by going through the Oklahoma drivers handbook and taking some practice permit tests.
When you successfully complete the learner permit test, you will be awarded with the Oklahoma drivers permit.
Drivers Permit Restrictions
You may be excited about having your permit and being able to go for a ride, but don't let that excitement get the best of you. You must always remember that your permit is not a full driving license and it comes with the learners permit restrictions that you should observe at all times. Failure to observe the restrictions will result in you losing the driving privileges.
Learners Permit Holding Permit
License applicants who are under 18 years of age must hold the learners permit for at least 6 months before taking the road test and obtaining the intermediate drivers license. Restrictions posed by the intermediate license will be lifted once the driver reaches the age of 18.
You should always remember that driving is a privilege, not a right, and you are not to abuse this right by breaking the restrictions posed by the Oklahoma learners permit.
