Indiana Learners Permit - Indiana Drivers Permit
Obtaining the Indiana learners permit is one of the essential steps in the process of applying for the Indiana drivers license. Indiana drivers permit applicants are required to prove that they are ready to hit the Indiana roads without endangering those around them. Driving is a great responsibility and the BMV in Indiana is trying to ensure that you are up to the task.
Types of Indiana Permits
At the moment, there are two different types of drivers permits that you can obtain in Indiana. The first type is the Indiana drivers education permit, which is issued for you to be able to complete a drivers ed course. There is also a regular Indiana learners permit that you may obtain.
Regular Learners Permit
Just like for any other state, the primary reason why you are issued with a learners permit is to allow to practice driving and prepare for the driving test that will be required when you will apply for the Indiana drivers license. Please note that Indiana learners permit is not a full license yet and it has certain restrictions and limitations.
Learners Permit Requirements
In order to be eligible for Indiana learners permit, you must:
- Be 16 years old or older
- Possess a valid Social Security Number
- Provide proof of identity and DOB
- Have your legal guardian sign the financial responsibility form. The form ensures that if you are involved in an accident that results in financial losses to someone, your parents will accept the responsibility for such loses.
If you fulfill the above requirements, you will be able to take the vision and learners permit tests and the vision test. If you pass both tests, you are awarded with the learners permit.

Indiana Learners Permit Restrictions
Even though the learners permit allows you to drive, you must still observe all restrictions that are posed on you by possession of the permit. You have to remember that you are not allowed to drive alone and you must have a licensed driver accompanying you at all times.
