Hawaii Learners Permit

Hawaii Learners Permit

Hawaii learners permit is your first step towards your drivers license. Although the Hawaii drivers permit does not give you full driving privileges yet, it provides you with a great chance to practice your driving skills before you apply for a license.

Hawaii GDL

Safety is an important issue when it comes to operating a vehicle and this is why Hawaii has its own graduated drivers license system which targets teen drivers. Apart from a set of restrictions applied at the learners permit phase, all teen drivers have to complete a Hawaii drivers ed class. The program will teach them everything starting from the rules of the road and down to the safe driving techniques no one should dismiss.

Learners Permit Exam

If you are applying for the Hawaii drivers permit, the Department of Motor Vehicles will require you to take a learners permit exam at one of the Drivers License offices. The permit test will assess your current knowledge of driving rules so the DMV knows that you know your stuff.

If you are under 18 years of age and took a drivers education class, you are already well prepared for the learners exam. If you have not taken the class – don’t stress, there are other ways to study. The DMV provides everyone with a free Hawaii drivers manual that should be more than enough for you to pass the test. Free practice tests are also available.

If you are at least 15 years and 6 months old and you pass both the permit and vision exams, you will be issued with a Hawaii learners permit.

Hawaii Permit Restrictions

Although you may be very excited about finally getting that drivers permit, you should remember that you do not have full driving privileges yet and there are certain permit restrictions applicable in your case. You are not allowed to drive unless being supervised by a licensed driver who must be sitting next to you at all times. For teenagers there are also passenger restrictions involved.

If you are under 18 years of age, you will be required to hold your Hawaii drivers permit for the minimum period of 18 months before you can be issued with a Hawaii drivers license.

Applicants who are over 18 do not have this holding period and may apply for their license as soon as they gain enough driving experience.
