Basic requirements for obtaining a drivers license or a learners permit in Texas
- Minimum permit age: 14
- Minimum holding period:12 months for applicants under 15, 6 months for applicants over 15
- Minimum license age: 15
- Permit test: written test, taken at the DPS, questions on road signs and traffic rules
- License test: driving test, taken at the DPS (can be dismissed if the student completed a driver education course)
- Supervised driving: with a licensed driver over 21 years of age
- Driver education: completion of a state-approved driver education course is required for every learner permit applicant who is under 17 and ½ years old.
