Idaho Drivers License
Planning on hitting the Idaho roads and not holding a drivers license issued by another state? In this case, you will need to apply for the Idaho driver's license and before you get down to the process, you should choose the drivers license that is right for you.
Idaho Drivers License Types
At the moment, the state of Idaho offers the following license types:
- Class D. This is a regular Idaho driving license and it allows you to operate most of the common vehicles.
- Class M. A motorcycle drivers license, comes as an endorsement to your regular license.
- Class A, B and C. Commercial drivers licenses.
If you have never held a license before, you will need to start from the regular Idaho drivers license and keep on adding additional endorsements as you gain some driving experience.
Idaho GDL
Safety is a major issue when you mix teenagers and driving. This is why the Idaho DMV came up with a graduated drivers license system that is designed to reduce the number of casualties among teen drivers. The GDL laws apply to all driver's license applicants who are under 17 years of age and they include the compulsory drivers education program, supervised driving and a holding period for the instructional learners permit.
Written Exam
Before you can get behind the wheel, you will be required to prove that Idaho driving rules are not a stranger to you. The Idaho DMV will give you a comprehensive written permit test on the traffic rules and road signs before you will be granted a privilege to drive.
If you are already enrolled in the drivers education class, your instructor is probably preparing you for the test. Those who did not take the class may wish to use the Idaho drivers manual to prepare for their DMV experience. And should you ever want to see how well you are prepared now, the Idaho practice tests are here for you.
Learners License
If you successfully pass the tests at the DMV, you will be issued with the Idaho learners permit. The permit is a document that allows you to practice your driving before you go for the road test and under no circumstances are you allowed to drive without a supervising driver being present next to you.
Driving Test
When you feel confident enough to take a driving test, you should make an appointment with one of the drivers license testing locations and take your Idaho drivers license test. You must provide your own vehicle for the test.
Once you pass the driving exam, the examiner will give you your results in a sealed envelope. You must take this envelope to the drivers license office and they will issue you with your Idaho drivers license.
