NYS Practice Test Question 131

Today we are looking at yet another NY permit test question that covers railroad crossings. Why are these questions so important that the DMV chooses to include them into almost each and every test paper they have? The reason why you see so many questions on using railroad crossings on permit test papers all over the country is the fact that thousands of accident happen at railroad crossings every year and because mortality rates in such accidents are extremely high. Knowing the safe rules of going through railroad crossings may save your life some day, make sure you learn them well. Sample Question

“WHEN YOU ARE IN A LINE OF TRAFFIC THAT IS CROSSING A RAILROAD TRACK THAT HAS NO SIGNALS OR GATES:”

A. You have the right of way and do not need to check for trains
B. You may pass slower drivers crossing the track
C. You need to make sure there is space to get all the way across the tracks without stopping, before you start to cross
D. All of the above

Let's go over these answers in more details now.

Permit Test Answers

Answer A suggests that you have the right of way and you do not need to check for trains if the railroad crossing in front of you has no signals or gates. One thing you need to remember at all times is that the train ALWAYS HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY. The train cannot start or stop as quickly as you do and should you travel into its path, the train driver won't be able to do anything to prevent an accident.

Answer B states that it is fine to pass other drivers who are being too slow while crossing the tracks. Do you remember the rules that tell you when passing is forbidden? One of them states that you cannot pass if you are within 100 feet (30m) of a railroad crossing on a two-way roadway (page 52 of the New York drivers manual). It is not all right to pass anyone on the tracks either.

Answer C states that you need to make sure there is space to get all the way across the tracks without stopping, before you start to cross. This sounds very reasonable - you don't want to be stuck on the tracks when the train comes.

Answer D suggests that all of the above answers are correct. We have already learned that answer A and answer B are incorrect, so this one is also not true.

Correct Answer

The correct answer to this New York permit test question is C:

“WHEN YOU ARE IN A LINE OF TRAFFIC THAT IS CROSSING A RAILROAD TRACK THAT HAS NO SIGNALS OR GATES YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THERE IS SPACE TO GET ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE TRACKS WITHOUT STOPPING”

This is an important rule that you need to remember: you have to take all precautions to avoid being stuck on railroad tracks, you do not want to find yourself in a situation when a train comes and you cannot move forward or back up because you are blocked by other vehicles. If you hear a train coming and you find yourself unable to drive off the tracks, abandon the vehicle and move as far away from the tracks as possible. Do not linger as your chances of surviving an accident involving a train are 40 times less than surviving in an accident that involves another vehicle.
