Printable DL-92 Request Form

Parent taught drivers education is one of the most convenient (and cheapest!) ways of fulfilling state requirements for teen drivers. The parent taught method of instruction has been around for decades, yet it is still one of the most confusing things a parent or a soon-to-be driver will have to face on the way towards a full-scale drivers license, fraught with hundreds of different pitfalls. While we cover most of these potential issues and help you steer clear of them in other articles, today we want to concentrate on the first and foremost step – obtaining your DL-92 form and submitting it to the state. We will also show you a few tricks on how to save yourself a few weeks on waiting for the form to be processed. If you are in the rush now and are totally fine with having to wait another couple of weeks before receiving your parent taught driver education package – go ahead and scroll to the end of the page, then use the button to download your printable DL92 registration form. Don't want to wait four weeks for your package to arrive? Read on to find out exactly how you can speed the process up!

Why do I even need this request form?

This is the question that comes to everyone's mind – why do I have to jump these hoops, having to download the DL-92 request form, having to mail it to the state and then wait for their response. Why can't I just go ahead and begin my drivers education class right now and then simply bring my certificate into a local DPS office to get my learners permit? It would be nice to be able to do that, wouldn't it? The problem is that not every parent can teach their child how to drive, there are certain restrictions that need to be observed and the DPS is just trying to make sure you will not waste any time on taking the class and then having your results rejected. You won't believe how many people had to go through this hassle before and having the state pre-authorize the instructor helps to keep the number of such faulty applications down to a minimum (some people still manage to slip through the cracks even today). Having to download the DL 92 form, having to go through these instructions keeps the number of errors down and saves time for both you as a student and the DPS as a licensing agency.

The quickest way to get your parent taught package

If you have done your research, you probably know that obtaining the package can take 3-4 weeks, depending on how loaded the licensing agency is (the DL-92 form used to be processed by the DPS, but this has changed in September 2015 when the task was directed to the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration). However, it does not have to be that way and you can get your packet much faster, usually within a week of sending your DL-92 application form). How do you do that? It's all about filling in the form the right way! If you fill the form in the right way, you can have the package e-mailed, instead of having it sent via regular mail, it takes significantly less time and ensures that you have a digital copy of all necessary materials that you can reprint any time you want! If you order a printed package, you are pretty much stuck with what you receive and should you lose some of the forms in that packet (i.e. DL-90A, DL-90B or DL-91A), you will have to order a replacement from the state and have to wait another three or four weeks until you receive them, a hassle that can easily be avoided! All you need to do is mark the box that say “Check to have the packet e-mailed” on your DL-92 form and you save yourself loads of time and trouble! Here is how it looks:

Common questions about the DL-92 form

Who processes the DL92 form? It used to be the DPS, but this has changed in September 2015, now all parent taught drivers education package applications will be processed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration (TDLR).

Where do I mail the DL92 form? The address is actually right at the top of the form itself, but here it is again in case you have missed it:

Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
PO Box 12157
Austin, Texas 78711

What if I mailed the old version of the DL-92 form to the DPS? It shouldn't be a problem, since the DPS will continue processing all incoming DL-92 forms parallel to the TDLR. As long as you do so no later than October 2015, you will still receive your packet.

I have mailed my Texas DL-92 form and have not heard back. If you have requested for the packet to be mailed to you, please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery. If your parent taught packet is being e-mailed, it shouldn't take more than two weeks. You can call the TDLR at (800) 803-9202 or shoot them an e-mail at cs.driver.education.safety@tdlr.texas.gov.
