The DMV only wants those who know the traffic rules inside out to be on the road and sometimes phrases permit test questions in a way that may confuse you. Practice permit tests will help you learn this terminology and wording used at the DMV.

Another reason for you to take the permit practice test for California is the fact that practice tests help you evaluate your level of preparation before you go in for the actual California permit test. You might have completed a California drivers education course, read a guide to California drivers license and think you know all the rules and regulations, however, there is no way of knowing that you are right unless you actually test yourself. Doing well on the California DMV practice test will also strike some confidence into you and reduce the amount of stress you will experience at the office.

Considering the arguments listed above and taking into account that practice tests are free, the question of why should you take a CA permit practice test before you go in for the real thing turns into why shouldn't you take it?

Hi there, buddy and thanks for the question! You are correct in the assumption that the person going up the hill has better control of the vehicle, however in this case, the situation is reversed. If you do what you suggested, i.e. stop and start backing down, you are now going DOWN THE HILL and thus you have less control of the vehicle. This is why the correct answer is that the other driver, the one traveling down the hill, should back up the road to let you pass, since by going up the road, he will have better control of the vehicle, compared to you going down. Basically, it all comes down to figuring out who will have better control of the vehicle WHILE maneuvering to let the other person pass. The vehicle traveling up the hill always has the right of way for a very simple reason: it may be very hard for a heavy truck to start moving up the hill should it be forced to stop, it requires a lot of power. If you are traveling down the hill and you see a narrow spot, it's best to stop and let everyone traveling up the hill pass BEFORE reaching that tight spot. Hope this explains it, let us know if you have any doubts about any other questions from this California practice permit test and good luck at the DMV!

Well of course, you don't want to be tailgated. It's correct :P

Ok. I dont get this, Can somebody explain this to me? Cus Idk if I'm correct or not. IF YOU DRIVE UP A NARROW, STEEP ROAD AND MEET A CAR WITH NO ROOM TO PASS: A. You should back down the road B. The other driver should back up the road C. Neither driver should back at all In that question, I chose letter A, since i'm driving up the hill shouldn't I be the one backing up? since I have better control of my vehicle ???

Great, will wait to hear back from you!

I'll be taking it today so I'll come back here after!

I wish the test had more questions here I've taken the practice test at least 10 times and am still getting new questions. Maybe a way to take it 40 questions at a time?

Okay so. The Speed limit question near a school zone is a tricky one. It can be all 3 depending where you are, you just have to see the sign.

You are welcome, Niki, we are very glad that you found this California permit practice test useful, please share it through twitter and facebook. To my best knowledge, the DMV also offers a free practice test on their website, at least it was there last time I checked, couple of months back. It should be very similar to these sample questions that we have here. Anyway, good luck with your Caifornia permit test at the DMV!

CHECKING TRAFFIC BEHIND YOU: A. Is not a good idea, look ahead B. Will help you if you're being followed CORRECT ANSWER C. Is only good if you're slowing down YOUR ANSWER This is confusing and irritating

thanks for the test! it's really helpful. i think it's silly that the DMV doesn't have this on their site!

You are welcome and we will appreciate if you will share this California practice permit test through facebook or twitter, this will help others find it a bit easier. Thank you!

Really appreciate this test! I'm taking the test tomorrow for a California driver's license since I'm from out-of-state! I feel much more relaxed about it now! :)

You are correct, you should not watch the construction zone. The correct answer to this practice permit test CA sample question is A - Pass the construction zone carefully and avoid rubbernecking. You have to obey all set speed limits and watch out for the workers, however there is no point in driving too slow as you will just cause a traffic jam. Let me know if that helps!

you shouldn't watch the construction as you pass because that takes your eyes off the road and you're distracted

Not sure what you are referring to here, buddy. You have three choices for this question: "Drive 20 to 25 mph under the speed limit", "Drive 5 to 10 mph under the speed limit" and "Maintain a 55 mph speed limit". The correct answer is to drive 5-10 mph under the speed limit. Let me know if you are being shown different answers to this practice question and I will go ahead and I will fix this practice permit test for California.

Hey buddy, thanks for commenting on this California practice permit test! I understand that some of these practice questions may seem to be worded in a strange way, however this wording resembles that used on the real California permit test. The DMV words their permit test questions in a tricky way, they want to make sure that you really understand those rules and we are trying to mimic that wording to give you a better chance at passing the exam. If you think that some practice questions showed you incorrect answers or you found a mistake anywhere else on the site, please post it into the comments and we will do our best to explain the answer to you or fix the error. Thank you!

Some of these questions are worded too vaguely and some just seem incorrect.

Correct answers are displayed on the page, it should show you the answer you have given and the correct answer for each one of the questions.

i had three of the same questions....and i answered them all wrong so it lowered my score....also i cant see what the correct answer is for the Q's that I got incorrect...

Thank you for this test! I scored pretty well on it so it's boosting up my confidance for my permit test which I am taking tomorrow. I have taken perhaps almost half a dozen of these practice tests because I'm one of those peopel who need to get used to the test before taking it in order to score well. Unlike most of the other tests I've taken, this test was well-detailed in its question, not leaving any vagueness or ambiguity that would cause doubt or questions in the answers. Thanks once again!
