Types of Drivers Handbooks

Depending on the type of drivers license that you currently hold or are thinking of applying for, you may have the need of different information. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) tries its best to provide the information in a logical fashion and deliver it to the right audience. At the moment, most states make the following DMV driver's manuals available:

  • Regular drivers license handbook
  • Motorcycle driver manual
  • Commercial drivers handbook

As you might have guessed, the names of the driver manuals specify what kind of audience might be interested in reading it. The regular DMV drivers handbook is addressed at all regular license holders and first-time license applicants. If you are just thinking of applying for a learners permit or drivers license - this is the book you should go for.

The motorcycle drivers handbook is usually addressed at drivers who intend to ride a motorcycle and it is usually intended for use alongside the regular DMV handbook, not as a stand alone resource. Make sure to obtain both books if you are a motorcycle person.

Finally, there is a commercial drivers manual. The commercial drivers handbook is intended for use by those for whom driving is a job. If you are a commercial drivers license holder and you operate interstate, you may want to check out the commercial drivers handbooks for all the states you visit, to make sure there are no surprises waiting for you on the road.

Drivers Manual Contents

The regular drivers license handbook is divided into a few parts. The first part usually covers the licensing procedure and provides a detailed description of obtaining the drivers license or learners permit. This part of the manual will also provide you with the information on what type of licenses are currently offered, the graduated license laws and general license related questions. The second part of the drivers handbook usually includes the state traffic law, description of all road signs you may encounter on the road and safe driving tips and techniques.

In addition to that, most state drivers handbooks include study questions and at least one practice permit test. Taking the tests will show you how well you understand the ideas put forth in the book. If your state permit book did not have any practice tests - don't stress! You can take this DMV practice test or a drivers license practice test that are completely free and you can retake them over and over again until you nail virtually every question there is!

What to Study

One of the first questions that comes to the mind of any first-time license applicant is “Do I have to learn all this to get my license”? The amount of the information presented in the drivers handbook can be somewhat overwhelming, however, you will have to learn most of this stuff by heart before you can go in for the learners permit test. You can usually have a quick read through the sections that describe the documents you need to bring to the DMV, but when it gets to the traffic laws - you have to learn the stuff. Make sure that you do not just memorize things from the manual, you have to gain an understanding of why the rule is what it is, it will make passing the test at the DMV much easier.

When you are preparing for the exam, you do not have to limit yourself to the driver license handbook. Make sure to check out drivers education courses that are offered by high schools and commercial driving schools in your area as they do a great job of getting you ready for the test.

Where Can I Get The Driver's Handbook

The official driver manuals are usually composed and released by the DMV, that is why they are also called the “DMV drivers manual”. You can usually obtain a printed copy of the manual at your nearest DMV office.

If you have an Internet connection, you can also download a copy of the online drivers manual. When it comes to getting the manual online, the state usually gives you two options: you can either read everything online or you can download the drivers handbook PDF file to your computer. The PDF file can be printed out later.

Depending on your state of residence, the manuals can be provided in languages other than English. Common driver's manual languages include Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese and Russian.
